We popped here while nipping to the regular Foodie Friday in Stockport last Friday of the month - pm and the old market does seem to be having a bit of a renaissance period. Ok so I may have had slightly rose tinted specs on due to me enjoying the fine fine food on offer outside but it really is a nice spot. In the week, it's open with a good mix of shops - all sorts of market grocers, butchers and a little cafe - plus some totally random shops and some real gems like High Peak brewing Co go here for amazing beer from all around the world - amazing x!

On this occasion with it being FF, you could sit inside and take a load off, buy from some of the traders and even buy beer from High Peak to drink! A winner for me and great architecture to boot! Some great pubs like the Bakers are in the Market square too if you fancy getting your whistle wet! Everybody, look how pretty! I'm writing this not as an actual market customer - more an aesthetic appreciator.

I promise I'll be back to Yelp the markets properly. You know Em loves her updates, peoples. I recently attended Stockport's Vintage Village which took place in these impressive Victorian Markets, and boy, are they attractive.

Like if they were a guy, I'd be giggling like a stupid schoolgirl while they spoke to me. And I'd probably accidentally snort or something. They lent themselves incredibly well to the whole retro vibe, especially those types at the markets who were selling and crafting cute little trinkets.

First of all they're covered, which is great for our inclement Manchester weather ooh, quick warning: They'll practically beat you about the face with a handbag and give you the evils for the rest of the day , and they have underfloor heating. Food was provided by the lovely Zip's Grill, an Australian affair that offers all kinds of tasty treats from their meaty bacon and egg butties and steak wraps to mezzes, soups and salads reflective of the proprietor's Aussie Greek-Cypriot background.

Oh, and they have loads of different kinds of bread too. The stalls I saw marked out, closed obviously at the time due to the Vintage Fair, I was very intrigued by.

And many others to boot. Anyway, thus ends my Scrabble-esque chat about Stockport's Market Halls. Now, if I could just find a cab driver who takes me right to the door instead of abandoning me on a drizzle-ridden pedestrian road with armfuls of Yelp goodies, that'd be just dandy.

If you read my reviews of Stockport Hat Museum, the Air Raid Shelters, Lyme Park and Vernon Park then you'll probably gather that I'm quite a fan of Stockport and its surroundings.

I know, my friends tell me I'm mad too. Despite Stockport Council's claims that, "no visit to Stockport would be complete without experiencing the hustle and bustle of market day" the market alone is not a particularly compelling reason to visit Stockport. However, it is a good place to visit if you happen to be there on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The market is years old this year and the market place is rumoured to be the location of the last wife sale in England.

In addition, it was the site used for ancient forms of punishment including the stocks, whipping post, stretch neck and dungeon. Thankfully today they tend to stick to selling fruit, veg, meat, fish and assorted household objects, which can all be found in the covered and outdoor sections of the market. The market is certainly more bustling than the other Manchester markets I've been to including Altrincham, Hulme and Longsight, and the character of the old market hall, and of some of the traders, is conducive to haggling.

The stalls on the street don't quite have that atmosphere, but could be useful if you're looking for a cheap tube of Colgate or some sports socks perhaps.

Air - yes air! Well this is NOT like that - you can breath! I came here for the Yelp Summer Stunner event and thoroughly enjoyed the authentic aesthetics of the building covering my head. Definitely a historical place to visit that holds some very funky events! Being a born and bred stopfordian I have spent many days being dragging, or indeed dragging people, around this market hall and over the years it hasnt changed.

It still has that smell and anyone who knows market halls knows what I mean by that smell, I find this very nostalgic. What has changed though is that it's no longer the stockport lot selling bargains it's rip of merchants selling the same tat you can buy in pound shops but at stupid prices.

You can be in and out in less than 5 minutes, compared to other market halls such as Ashton, Hyde or Bury this is a huge dissapointment to what years ago was great, This is an old fashioned market with stalls indoor and outdoors. It is situated in Stockport Town Centre and includes a wide variety of stalls from Cheeses and vegetables to hardware goods and knitting supplies.

It is a great place to find a barging and a lot more interesting than browsing high street chain stores because you never know what you might find. There are quite a lot of fresh food stalls where you will find a lot of local produce and the prices are better than the local supermarkets. I have used the knitting stall several times and it is great for cheap acrylic yarns and needles. This market is lovely, If you can manage the walk up the huge hill to get to it.

The market is just outside the sliding doors at the back of the shop. I spotted some lovely undies A market that is steeped in history and is a truly old fashioned market with a wide variety of stalls most of them being cheap and the stall holders usually very cheerfull.

The main hall is in the middle of refurbishment and it looks like being really nice when its finished. The market is clean and tidy and is regulary swep throughout the day to maintain the clean appearance. There are plenty of available car parking spaces close by and a good bus service runs close by well worth a visit Stockport market is ace and they have recently done up the inside market.

Some of it is eally old fashioned, with little tea rooms off the stalls. It's great to browse and really have some life in a town centre for once. The nearby produce hall is also worth a visit as they do some great local stuff. All these people who are lauding Stockport Market must in all realty have lived in Stockport all their lives and never been anywhere else.

Stockport Market is absolute rubbish and the prices charged by the stall holders are probably on a par with that of Selfridges and Harrods and this probably reflects the rents charged by Stockport Council to the stallholders.

Come on citizens of Stockport - have you been to Bury Market. I live in Woodley and thank God for my free bus pass so that I can take advantage of the excellent deals I am afforded at Bury and Bolton. Pull your socks up Stockport - the only good thing about your marketplace is the Boars Head where a good Yorkshire brewery can practicaaly half the prices charged by your own local brewery.

I try to go every Saturday. I especially adore the indoor market. Like steppinmg back in time. It's a real shame what has happened to Stockport market in recent times. It used to be massive, with people flocking from miles around, every stall open for business selling fresh produce, quality clothing, toys, cosmetics and the like.

The old indoor market building was beautiful. Now its a shell of what it used to be. There are barely any stalls left open, with many sellers being forced to close down due to poor attendance and competition from local Superstores.

It is flooded with stalls selling mass-produced, poor quality clothing and its full of chavs and scallies. You can still get fresh fruit and veg, and the butchers is still open, but the heart and soul of the market is long, long gone. Stockport Market is a fantastic place. There is an indoor and outdoor market that is what i would describe as a 'typical old style' market.

There is everything you could want to be in a market place and wide range of cheap items can be bought here. There are also meat stands and cake stands which produce good quality food.

The market does get very busy however, but most markets do, and i think its a sign of a good market anyway. The marketstalls are closely laid out so you dont' have to walk miles to the next stall and the people running the stalls are most of the time very friendly. Visit the cake lady!!! Fab This is an old style market in the centre of stockport with everything you'd expect, theres a meat vans offering good cheap meat, burger vans, clothes stalls, household goods, fruit and veg.

Shawcross Fold - Stockport Council

Theres also the umbrella indoor maket which has featured in an iceland advert driving home for xmas one there is also another indoor food market known as the hen market which sells speciality meat, cheese, pies, bread and eggs. This part used to be a lot bigger and better but now it is posher and smaller, it is now like a posh deli. Sometimes the market gets a bit crowded on a saturday but it is not as busy as it used to be.
